Viruses and spyware (sometimes called malware) are a very serious threat to your privacy and the general health of your computer.  As a general rule you should have at least some kind of virus protection running on your computer at all times.  There are programs that you can purchase (Symantec/Norton, McAfee) and there are also free anti-virus scanners available such as AVG.

Keeping a virus scanner up to date is critical no matter which one you have.  Most anti-virus programs will check for updates on their own and will also display when the last update for it was. Do not let this date get more than a few days old, as new viruses are released every day.

For spyware related problems there are also many free programs out there that will try to take care of nearly all spyware related problems (pop-ups, random computer shutdowns, computer acting slowly, etc). These programs also try to actively watch to prevent spyware before it becomes a problem on your machine.
