Valentine craft ideas to make this your child's sweetest Valentine's Day
ever!
Candy Cane Card
|

Candy Canes
Red card stock
Ruler
Color-Aid paper
Craft knife
Non-toxic white glue
Marker |
- Turn the red card stock into a card by folding the card in half.
- Tear the Color-Aid paper into a rectangle to fit on the front of
the card. The white side will show through along the ripped edges
and form a pretty frame. Glue this rectangle onto the card.
- Glue two candy canes in the center, facing each other to form a
heart. Be sure to keep the wrappers on. (Mini canes would also be
cute.)
- Write a message in the center of the candy heart or along the
outside and don't forget to sign the inside of the card.

Lollipop Flowers
|

Red and green construction paper or card stock
Scissors
Lollipops
Glue stick |
- From red construction paper, cut out a heart that's just larger
than the lollipop candy and glue it to the wrapper.
- For the leaves, fold the green paper in half and cut out a leaf
shape, leaving the two sides attached at the seam.
- Unfold the double leaf shape, coat the entire inside surface
with glue, and fold it back over the lollipop stem, pressing to
secure.
Tip: If you use cardboard templates, one child can
trace and cut hearts while another works on the leaves. |
Fingerprint Heart Card
|

Non-toxic stamp pad (red)
Notecards or paper
Crayons or markers |
- Press an index-finger into the ink pad. Then stamp a V-shaped
5-inch heart on a notecard by joining two finger prints at the
bottoms.
- Use a marker of crayon to compose a sweet nothing and then sign
the card with love.
Variations: Once kids master making single hearts,
they can try adding them to folded notepaper or postcards, stamp the
middle of a torn-paper heart card or stamp them on each frame of a
construction paper accordion card. |
Valentine Butterfly
|

Sticks of gum
Licorice strings
Construction paper
Scissors
Heart stickers
Tape |
- Place two pieces of string licorice between two sticks of gum,
taping the top and bottom closed to secure the antennae in place.
- Next, cut two heart-shaped wings from construction paper, write
your valentine message on them, and secure them to the top stick of
gum with a heart sticker. Add other stickers to give personality to
your butterfly.

Romantic Rocks
|

Heart-shaped rocks
Paint
Newspaper
Paper towels |
- Search for heart-shaped rocks in the rockiest places near you: a
stream bank, a driveway, the parking lot. They don't have to be
perfect, as long as they have the two telltale lobes of a heart and
some sort of point at the bottom.
- Clean them and let them dry on newspaper or a paper towel.
- Now it is time to get creative! Set everyone to work painting
the rocks. Let them dry then they're ready to give away to
your Valentine!

Sweetheart Puzzle Pin
|

Old Puzzle pieces
Red spray paint
Newspaper
Glue
Pin backing (available at craft stores) |
- Place 20 to 25 old jigsaw puzzle pieces, excluding the
straight-edged border pieces, on newspaper and spray-paint them red
(brush-applied paint will also work).
- Let the pieces dry thoroughly before gluing them into a heart
shape. Use only as many as you need; each heart will look different.
- Glue on a pin back and present it to your true love.
Variations: Glue on magnetic backing to create a
sweet magnet. |
Heart Strings
|

Paper
Scissors
Markers
Cookie cutter (optional)
Glue (optional) |
- Cut out a strip of paper that's about 18 by 2 1/2 inches, and
fold, accordion style, in 2 1/2-inch sections.
- On the top layer, draw a heart, either by hand or by tracing
around a cookie cutter. Remember: Just as with a paper doll chain,
the sides of the heart should extend out to the folded edges.
- Cut through all the layers of paper except where the sides touch
the fold.
- Decorate the hearts with markers or glue on pieces of paper.
|
Rings of Love
|

|
- Roll out a piece of salt dough 1/2
inch thick. Place the heart and star templates on the dough and cut
around them (or use cookie cutters). Place the shapes on a baking
tray lined with parchment paper and bake them for about four hours
at 250 degrees.
- When the shapes have hardened, remove
the tray from the oven (using oven mitts) and transfer them to a
cooling rack. Once they have cooled, smooth rough edges with
sandpaper before painting your rings. When dry, paint then apply a
coat of varnish.
- Glue a ring attachment on to the back
of each shape and leave the glue to dry before trying on the rings.
Your Rings are
ready to adorn you and your loved ones! They are so easy to make that
you might as well wear one on each of your fingers.

Salt Dough Recipe
10 1/2 oz salt
10 1/2 oz flour
2 tbsp vegetable oil
7 fl oz water
Mixing Bowl
Weighing Scales
Wooden Spoon
Measuring Cup
Plastic Bag
-
Using the scales, weigh the correct amount of flour
and salt in the bowl. Mix them together using the wooden spoon.
-
Gradually pour the 7 oz of water over the flour and
salt and mix well.
-
Pour the oil over the mixture and mix it in well.
When all the oil has been absorbed, remove the dough from the bowl
and place on a clean surface that has been sprinkled with flour.
-
Knead the dough until it is firm, then put it in a
plastic bag or wrap it in plastic food wrap. Place the dough in the
refrigerator for 30 minutes before you use it.
Tip: You can store the unused dough
in an airtight container or plastic bag, and out it in the refrigerator. |
