What To Do When the Lights Go Out

  • Check to see if the outage affects the neighborhood or just your house.  (if it is only your house, check for a blown fuse and call an electrician if you need to.)

  • Call us to report a neighborhood outage or downed power lines.  Assume all downed lines are "live," even if they aren’t sparking. Never touch a power line with your hand or any object.

If a power line falls across your vehicle while you’re inside, do not get out. Wait for help to arrive. If you must get out because of fire, jump free rather than stepping out. Never touch the ground or a conductive surface in contact with the ground and equipment that’s in contact with a power line at the same time.

  • Be patient with our utility workers as they attempt to restore your electrical service.  Other neighborhoods may also have outages.
  • Keep refrigerators and freezer doors closed.  Contents should be safe for at least 24 hours.
  • Turn off appliances so that none will be damaged when your power is restored.
  • Occasionally, a power outage will only be a momentary one.  Click here to find out more about MPIs.
