Water and Wastewater Terminology
Collector mains: Sewer mains throughout neighborhoods and
other service areas that carry wastewater from homes and businesses to the
interceptor mains.
Interceptor mains: Lines that run throughout the wastewater
system that carry the wastewater from the collector mains back to the Wastewater
Treatment Plant. Interceptor mains are the point at which smaller mains come
together and run through the city to the wastewater plant.
Fire hydrants: An access point for emergency water use. Fire
hydrants do not actually have water in them; the fire hydrant has to be manually
turned on or opened.
Lift station: Power generated machine that forces wastewater up
and over a high point in the system. Example: If the lines running through the
system come to a hill, a lift station would push the wastewater up and over the
hill.
Manhole: An access point where workers can get to the
wastewater lines to clean the line or fix a problem.
Pump station: A power generated machine that forces water up
and into water storage tanks.
Raw water/water supply: Water coming into the Water Treatment
Plant that has not been treated.
Service lines: Lines that run from the water and wastewater
mains to the property line at the service location.
Storage tanks: Steel tanks that create an elevation for
distributing water throughout the water system. Storage tanks are also used in
the event that there is an emergency.
Transmission lines: Lines that run throughout the system
distributing water from the Water Treatment Plant and the storage tanks to the
neighborhoods and other service areas.
Water main: Lines that run throughout the water system and
distribute water to neighborhoods and other service areas.
Water meter: The point of connection between MEWS and the
customer. The water meter connects a customer to MEWS' lines. The amount of water
used by the customer is measured through the water meter.
Water treatment plant: Place where raw water/water supply is
taken in and treated before it is distributed throughout the system to homes and
businesses.
Wastewater treatment plant: Place where water that has been
distributed throughout the system and has been used is retreated before it is
put back into the river.
