New Water Treatment Laboratory

Dec 14, 2023

Mayfield Electric & Water Systems is thrilled to announce the start of site work at the new water treatment laboratory located on the 400 block of South 12th Street. Yesterday, site work began with a scheduled timeline for completion of fall 2024 on this 3.2-million-dollar project. This is a crucial step in the recovery and rebuilding journey post the December 10th, 2021, tornado.

The new and improved water treatment lab will enhance our capabilities, increase efficiency, and further guarantee the quality and reliability of our drinking water system. The new facility will feature a secondary designated state certified lab that will allow us to complete more in house testing that is currently outsourced while bringing a reduction in cost and decreasing the length of time for boil water orders issued after a main break. The reduction in length of time will be due to the extended turnaround time required by the utilization of off-site out of area third-party labs. The facility will be a multi-purpose facility including office space and equipment storage. The facility will include an entirely new motor control center, SCADA controls, and automated backup generation.

Once the lab is complete phase two of construction will begin. A new 1,000,000-gallon Clearwell will be constructed. This will increase needed capacity, while ensuring redundancy and reliability. Upon completion of the new modern clear well, rehabilitation of the existing treatment facility, aerator and original Clearwell will begin. All of which sustained heavy damage during the December 10th tornado. Complete rehabilitation of all four service wells, three high service pumps, construction of the 600,000-gallon water tank and rehabilitation of the 1,000,000 gallon ground storage tank have been completed in the months after the disaster.

MEWS looks forward to completing each step to better serve our customers, community, and prepare Mayfield for progress, growth, and future economic development.
